The new US Government initiative will hold contractors accountable for cybersecurity. The new Civil Cyber Fraud initiative will focus on holding contractors accountable for failing to meet required cybersecurity requirements to ensure public sector information and infrastructure is safeguarded.
The Deputy Attorney General Monaco in a press statement said, “For too long, companies have chosen silence under the mistaken belief that it is less risky to hide a breach than to bring it forward and to report it. Well that changes today, [and] we will use our civil enforcement tools to pursue companies, those who are government contractors who receive federal funds, when they fail to follow required cybersecurity standards — because we know that puts all of us at risk.”
In a bid to build resilience against cybersecurity intrusions and hold companies to task for deliberately providing deficient cybersecurity products or services the US Justice Department has launched the Civil Cyber-Fraud Initiative. Under this, it will hold contractors responsible for misrepresenting their cybersecurity practices or protocols or violating their obligations to monitor and report cybersecurity incidents and breaches.
The US government intends to utilize the False Claims Act(FCA) to punish contractors and grant recipients for cybersecurity-related fraud for failing to secure their networks and notify about security breaches adequately.
Additionally, the DoJ has also planned to launch a National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET). The organization to dismantle criminal abuse of cryptocurrency platforms. It will focus on “crimes committed by virtual currency exchanges, mixing and tumbling services, and money laundering infrastructure actors.”
Though the FCC proposal will require amendments to the current Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) and Local Number Portability rules. Providing instructions to wireless carriers to adopt secure methods of confirming the customer’s identity before transferring their phone number to a new device or carrier. Apart from that, the changes will also require providers to immediately notify customers whenever a SIM change or port request is made on their accounts.
