Just ahead of its shutdown, Dark Sky has been removed from the iOS App Store. Users will no longer be able to download as it has been removed ahead of schedule.
Eversince Apple acquired Dark Sky in March 2020 it has incorporated a number of elements of the app into its own Weather app available on the iPhone and soon will be available on iPad.
Dark Sky has been available for purchase as a standalone weather app even after the acquisition, though earlier this year the app developers decided that the Dark Sky iOS app would no longer be available after December 31, 2022.
According to a Dark Sky blog post, the already purchased app that becomes unavailable at the end of 2022 will no longer get weather data, though the app still works. It is still unclear if the removal of Dark Sky will impact the app or if Apple has removed it early.
Officially the Dark Sky app is shutting down by the end of December this year. The Dark Sky API and website will continue to function until March 21, 2023. Developers using Dark Sky API can transition over to Apple’s WeatherKit API.
