TP-Link KP405 Kasa Smart Outdoor Wi-Fi plug with timer allows you to control one outdoor device from any location. The Kasa Smart KP405 is the most affordable outdoor smart plug. It connects via WiFi to your network enabling you to turn on or off a plugged-in device from your iOS/Android device with the Kasa Smart App.
While you are connected you can control, schedule, and set timers from any location. The plug can be used with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to control your plugged-in device using voice commands. SmartThings is compatible as well. This plug has an IP64 rating to protect against dust and water.
Though the IP64 weatherproofing is strong, the rubber outlet cover does not feel strong enough. The device has an LED-illuminated button at the top that allows for manual on/off control. You can also disable the LED if required using the control app. Maximum power support is 15 amps/1875 Watts or a motor of up to 1/2 horsepower. TP-Link claims a wireless range up to 300 feet, just like its Kasa products.
The KP405, like other Kasa Smart plugs, has a runtime monitor. It tells you how long it’s been on for the last day, week, and month. Though it seems to have a bug as it did not properly calculate the total runtime for the week or month. Apart from this, the device can be used more quickly in one day than it can in a week, a minor software glitch that will soon be fixed. The device still supports Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung Bixby voice assistants.
The $29 single Kasa Smart KP405 outdoor smart plug is an excellent choice if you are deeply involved in the Kasa Smart ecosystem.
- Physically, the KP405 is smaller than the KP400 (both have dual outlets).
- The cheapest outdoor smart plug from TP-Link
- Only one outlet
- The Runtime Monitor is currently inactive
