Dark Souls Servers Down To Investigate Issue that Can Give Someone Control Of Your PC

Dark Souls servers are down temporarily to investigate an issue that can give someone control of your PC. The publishers in a tweet said, “PvP servers for Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls: Remastered have been temporarily deactivated to allow the team to investigate recent reports of an issue with online services. Servers for Dark Souls: PtDE will join them shortly. We apologize for this inconvenience.”

Earlier hackers were able to exploit a vulnerability in the game which would allow them to remotely code on your PC, effectively taking control of it.

A post on the Elden Ring subreddit, yesterday mentioned a remote code execution (RCE) exploit. These are nasty as hackers can take control of your computer and brick them steal sensitive data and files or activate malicious software.

Thankfully the vulnerability is limited only on the PC, as it has no effect on the Dark Souls games released on consoles. A couple of days ago, the Dark Souls RCE exploit was seen in action during a Dark Souls 3 live stream. In the stream  The__Grim__Sleeper, a Twitch user was playing the game and after getting invaded the game crashed and the text-to-speech narrator comes alive. The player was in no way in control of what was going on and utterly shocked.

On the other front, Blue Sentinel, another Reddit user in a post said, a fan-developed anti-cheat for the game, has already been updated to stop this exploit. According to him the possibility of the exploit being leaked are rare, as only around four people directly connected with Blue Sentinel know how to pull off the nasty hack.

The publishers have been serious about the issue with the upcoming Elden Ring releasing next month. Let’s hope they manage to resolve the issue before that. Bandai Namco has also taken note of the issue, in a Reddit reply said, “Thanks very much for the ping, a report on this topic was submitted to the relevant internal teams earlier today, the information is much appreciated!”

Currently, all servers for Dark Souls games on PC are down, also there is no mention of when they will get back online. But it is confirmed the downtime is a result of the nasty exploit most likely.
