Netflix HDR Update - Good News for Google Pixel Owners
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The latest Netflix HDR update is good news for Google Pixel owners. Now you can watch your favorite shows and movies in HDR and HD quality. With the introduction of the new device owners of these phones or tablets will still have to wait, as Netflix will not immediately add HD and HDR support, it will take time to update the necessary software support on a device-by-device basis. There is still a long waiting list for these new Google Pixel owners.

Netflix on its support page mentioned, Netflix in HD and HDR is now (as of January 27, 2022) available for the Google Pixel 5a, Google Pixel 6, and Google Pixel 6 Pro. So from August 2021, when the Pixel 5a launched in August 2021, and up until now, it could only play Netflix in standard quality regardless of the Netflix plan in use. While in the case of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, these phones have been around since October 2021, yet they had to wait for quite a while.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro come with pretty fancy displays, whereas the Pixel 6 sports a 6.4-inch OLED display with FHD+ capabilities and a 90Hz refresh rate. The Pixel 6 Pro has a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED screen with QHD+ and a 120Hz refresh rate. This means the phones surely deserved to get Netflix in HD, as they can make the most of it, though not everyone can watch Netflix in HD and HDR.

Netflix offers three plans, where only two support HD and HDR (Ultra HD) respectively. The company is trying to recover HD costs by increasing the prices, but it’s still worth it as users can enjoy it on their high-quality phones like the latest Pixels. You will need to upgrade to a Standard plan in order to get HD quality streams, while for Ultra HD you require the Premium plan.

You will end up paying $15.49 per month for Netflix standard plan, it offers streaming on up to two devices at a time, plus HD-quality streams on supported devices. While the Premium plan will cost you around $20 per month and can be used up to 4 screens at once, all on Ultra HD quality.

Though keep in mind before you update your Netflix plan you will not always be able to stream in HD. Since it will also depend on how strong your internet connection is. While using your cellular connection or using a limited data plan, you may not be able to stream Netflix in HD on your Pixel, even with the appropriate plan.

Once you reach a decision, it is easy to enable HD, in case you have any doubts check out the Netflix support page for information relevant to your device.
