After carrying out trials for a number of years, Walmart ties up with Argo AI for driverless deliveries in 3 cities, Austin, Miami, and Washington, D.C.
Ford Escapes controlled by Argo AI self-driving system will be the car of choice. The Argo AI system is ranked at Level 4 on the SAE scale of self-driving capability. It uses a combination of sensors for guidance, while cameras and lidar being the primary ones.
Once the Walmart customer orders the items online, the Walmart staff member will place the items in the back of the driverless vehicle. Then the vehicle drives to the customer’s address and sends a notification to a smartphone, all this is done using Argo AI’s cloud-based infrastructure.
Currently, the service is restricted to defined service areas, while the service areas will expand over time and this includes more cities.
There are chances Walmart driverless delivery service may reach Detroit, Palo Alto, and Pittsburgh, as Argo AI is also testing self-driving vehicles there.
Walmart earlier also worked with Waymo and Cruise while testing driverless deliveries along with Argo AI.
