Earlier last year Xiaomi launched the Mi A1, a popular and affordable Android One device. It has now introduced the Android Mi A2 which is the improved version of the earlier Mi A1 and has similar clean design aspects. The review we have presented will help you understand if the Xiaomi Mi A2 is really worth buying.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Review
Xiaomi has become a popular brand in India and is widely accepted for its quality and prices. The phones come at a really good price and loaded with features that ensure you are satisfied after buying them.
The Mi A1 has been a successful device for the company throughout the world. The Mi A1 has been projected as a budget mode phone as a part of the Android One program. The phone offers smooth performance with its hardware, has a reasonable camera and sleek design, this combination makes it a desirable phone to buy in the budget category. But now with the launch of the Mi A2 which is its successor everyone is curious to know about it.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Design And Screen
The device will cost around Rs 16,999/- in India and is available online on Amazon.in. The device is completely made of metal and reminds us a bit of the OnePlus 5T. This is certainly not a downside, as the Mi A2 feels solid and luxurious. Though the metal housing makes the smartphone rather slippery. Fortunately, Xiaomi delivers a silicone case that offers more grip. Because of the metal, you do not have to worry about fingerprints and scratches. They are much less visible than with a glass housing.
Mi A2 comes with an an18:9 screen ratio which is has been a trend in most of the smartphones released in 2018. This ensures that the display occupies a larger part of the front without the housing obstructing your view. The display has increased from 5.5 to 6 inches, but the Mi A2 is far from rimless. Only the bars at the top and bottom have shrunk.
The display has a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels which ensures sharp, beautiful images where the color reproduction is fine. We expect to see an improved screen but can see some cuts with Xiaomi trying to cut down to keep the recommended price low. The screen is not as bright and can be annoying at times as it might be difficult to read on a sunny using the Mi A2 device.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Hardware And Performance
The Xiaomi Mi A2 comes with a Snapdragon 660 chip, which is present in the more expensive Nokia 7 Plus and BlackBerry Key2 smartphone. The Snapdragon 660 chip is nice and fast. The Mi A2 comes in two variants 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage space. Given the prices, it is more than sufficient for most users.
In an attempt to keep the prices low Xiaomi has cut down a number of features like the Mi A2 does not have micro sd support and NFC is missing. The Mi A2 also has no headphone connection available, which is not very common in this price range. Xiaomi does deliver an adapter, but it is annoying that the connection is not there. On the contrary, the Mi A1 had the micro sd and headphone port.
We also like to mention the Mi A2 is not waterproof, although we can not really expect that in this price range. The fingerprint scanner at the back is very good as it is in an ideal location and unlocks the phone very quickly.
Android One For Quick Updates
Stock android is nice and simple, like its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi A2 also is part of the Android One program. Moreover, you are assured of three years of monthly security updates. During the review period, the Mi A2 quickly received the patch of August and September 2018.
Furthermore, the Mi A2 gets at least one big Android update ie. to version 9.0 (Pie). Out of the box the phone is running on Android 8.1 (Oreo). The Android 9.0 update will probably appear before the end of this year. The Mi A2 comes with a lot of in-house apps offered by Xiaomi – such as a remote control app and file manager – but they never really get in the way.
The Mi A2 has got it right this time with an improvement in the camera compared to Mi A1. The latest device comes with a camera that shoots remarkably good photos and performs above average for devices in this price range. The phone is equipped with a dual camera with lenses of 12 and 20 megapixels. The secondary lens mainly helps with shooting in the dark and delivers relatively sharp images.
During the daylight too the Mi A2 camera performs very well. The quality of the picture is not much inferior compared to the cameras of more expensive devices. The colors look real and snapshots are sharp. Also, the portrait mode, where you add a bokeh effect to your images, works simply and well.
The Mi A2 makes a useful photo in almost all situations, and that is an advantage that the phone has compared to its competitors. You can record videos in 4K and the 20-megapixel front camera is good enough for selfies and video calling with friends or family.
Decent Battery Life
As far as the Battery Life is concerned it has relatively low battery life. The Xiaomi Mi A2 comes is powered with a 3010 mAh battery and it proves to be relatively low. When used during the review period noticed the phone would struggle to get through the daily work. The phone needs to be charged in case you have a busy day over your phone. Comparatively, there are other phones which offer a far better battery life in a similar price range.
Competitors of Xiaomi are also offering quick chargers. The Mi A2 comes with a USB port and support for Quick Charge 3.0 but does not come with a suitable adapter. You will need to purchase them separately. Though the phone comes with a modest battery capacity, charging does not take very long; the phone is full again in a little over an hour and a half.
Conclusion Xiaomi Mi A2 Review
The Xiaomi Mi A2 at the price it is being offered, there are many areas the phone impresses us. The smartphone comes with an excellent design, smooth hardware, and an amazing camera. On the software front too it is fine and the Android One program allows you to get timely updates all year-round.
The Mi A2 with the efforts to keep the prices low lack a few things like it has no micro sd support, NFC, headphone connection, and a screen that is not clear enough. Apart from this Xiaomi does not deliver a quick charger. If you are happy with the lack of these few things then the Mi A2 is an excellent smartphone that you can use for a long time.
