Artificial Intelligence will solve your insomnia problem to make you sleep better using a phone app that will monitor your snoring and sleep disorders.

Usually, sleeping disorders are diagnosed in specialist sleep clinics, though this can be a bit uncomfortable and inconvenient for some, especially during the pandemic. This where scientist

Professor Guy Brown and Dr. Ning Ma from the University of Sheffield’s Speech and Hearing Research Group. They have designed a state-of-the-art AI that can monitor snoring levels and identify sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea.

The researchers at the University of Sheffield said with the use of Artificial technology we can get proof of who snores the loudest and advise them how to stop it.

The technology is available via an app named SoundSleep being commercialized for iOS devices. The researchers said soon it will also be available for Android users.

The app currently uses Sheffield AI to enable people to monitor their sleeping sounds through their smartphones.

The app provides nightly reports based on the record and tracked snoring levels. This helps in understanding the causes, factors, and solutions to their sleeping disorders.

Dr. Ning Ma, the researcher from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Computer Science, said, “We understand that finding that secret to a good night’s sleep can seem stressful and confusing, so what we are trying to do with our research is use the latest, state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to help people get to the bottom of what is preventing them from getting a good night’s sleep as easily as possible.”

According to American Sleep Association, 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder. While nearly 25 million U.S. adults have obstructive sleep apnea. This causes a person’s breathing to stop and start while they sleep and they may also make gasping, snorting, or choking noises, wake up a lot and snore loudly.

One cannot ignore sleeping disorders as they may lead to high blood pressure, a higher chance of having a stroke, depression, and mood swings. It is also difficult to visit sleep clinics especially due to Covid restrictions.

The latest App developed by the researchers at the University of Sheffield is enhanced with AI and can identify sleep disorders from the sounds people make while sleeping.

The App will soon add more sophisticated AI, this will help people monitor their sleep and identify sleep disorders using their smartphones in their own homes. It could help them bring changes in their lifestyle or bedtime routine to get a better night’s sleep.

Iain Spray, project manager at Passion For Life Healthcare, the developers of the app said, “This technology enabled us to develop an app that stands out in the market in terms of innovation and performance; an app that could, unlike any other snoring management apps, be CE marked as a medical device.”

In the future researchers will work on finding ways to use AI in combination with smartphones and low-cost sensors. These can be placed on the body to further improve how sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated remotely, in the patient’s own home.
