According to research published in the journal iScience, chemicals have been detected on the surface of clothing. The study was authored by Kotaro Prausnitz (professor and J. Erskine Love Jr. Chair) and Song Li, who was a postdoctoral fellow at Georgia Tech before he moved to Boston’s Northeastern University.

Tattoos are used as a substitute for medical bracelets to communicate information. They provide the same level of safety and can be used to cover up scars, guide radiation treatments, or restore nipples following breast surgery. Tattoos also function as medical alerts for serious medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, and allergies.

Prausnitz has created technology that uses microneedles to inject vaccines and drugs in a painless process. This is new because the only other similar types of products are used mostly for anti-aging.

“We recognized an opportunity in the market to make getting a tattoo less painful and more convenient,” Prausnitz said. “Some people are willing to go through pain or wait for the perfect design, but we felt that others might prefer a tattoo that is pressed on your skin and does not upset the skin.”Painless Tattoos that Can be Self-Administered_1How technology is Changing Tattooing?
The Georgia Tech team has developed microneedles that are smaller than a grain of sand to tattoo more quickly and with a less painful sensation.

The researchers have found that tattoo needles can create tattoos quickly and efficiently.

Microneedle tattoos work by arranging the microneedles in a specific pattern. Each microneedle can then act like a pixel, eventually producing a tattoo in any shape or pattern.

Researchers make a mold with microneedles in a particular pattern and then fill them with ink. They add a patch backing to conveniently hold the tattoo while it’s applied. After a few minutes, the needles dissolve and release the ink into the skin. Colors can be chosen from an assortment of options including ones that are only visible when exposed to UV light.

Prausnitz’s lab has researched about microneedles for vaccine delivery for years, which later found to be beneficial in tattooing. With support from the Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs, Prausnitz’s team wanted to use this technology to identify spayed and neutered pets through tattooing – but then realized it could favor people as well.

The team ensured the tattoos are both private and secure. This is done by creating patches that need to be exposed to ultraviolet light or higher temperatures before they will appear.

This study showed that tattooed areas are permanent and safe, making them potential cosmetic or medicinal tattoos. Microneedle tattoos could alternatively be used to load temporary tattoos in the immediate future.

Microneedle patch tattoos can also be used as a discreet and painless way to mark animals instead of using ear tags or clipping their ears.

Creating tattoo-like images without the need for a needle, Biostamp is seeking to provide painless tattoos for people. They do this by using AI and microscopic material from your own body.

Prausnitz co-founded Micron Biomedical, which is developing microneedles using their technology to bring it into clinical trials and eventually make them accessible to patients.

The researchers of this study have an interest in the company that developed the patches and may receive royalties if it is sold. This has been disclosed and overseen by the Georgia Institute of Technology.
